Animate Individual Elements in an Image-Based PowerPoint

You add an animation to an image-based slide, and the whole page moves. How do you animate just one illustration or caption? Separate the page into selectable objects, group the text and pictures that should play together, then add an animation to each group in PowerPoint. If your existing PPTX already has separate objects, start with grouping.

This guide uses a real butterfly life-cycle conversion to emphasize the egg, larva, pupa and adult stages in sequence. Download the two-slide PPTX: slide 1 preserves the converted result; slide 2 has four groups with animations ready to try.

Separate your slide image into editable objects

Separate the page when a click selects the whole image

A PNG, JPG or image-based PDF stores the page as one picture. Applying Fade or Grow/Shrink to that picture affects the entire page. To control the butterfly, heading or captions individually, upload a clear source image or PDF to 2pptx and choose Full-element editable PPT. Check the page order, count and price, submit, then download the PPTX.

Full-element conversion provides editable text boxes and separated visual objects, generally transparent pictures. PowerPoint can animate text boxes, pictures and groups. Choose Full-element when you need to work with individual illustrations; Standard and Premium clean suit tasks focused on text. See the image-to-editable-PowerPoint separation guide for the conversion steps.

Images and PDFs capture a static layout. Set the playback order, timing and triggers after downloading. The four animations in this example were added to the actual converted result.

Real example: group the four life-cycle stages

This case comes from an October 25, 2026 conversion. The actual screenshot supplied by the user shows separate selection boundaries around the egg, larva, pupa, adult butterfly, labels and captions.

We used the corrected PPTX for this case and added grouping and animations on October 28. Each slide retains 37 underlying objects, including 10 text objects. Each animated group contains its stage illustration, small leaf, label background, name and description. The main heading, background decorations and arrows between stages stay still.

  1. Duplicate the converted slide in PowerPoint and keep the original for comparison.
  2. Open Home → Select → Selection Pane. Find the first stage's illustration, name, description and label.
  3. Hold Ctrl to select the objects that should play together, then choose Shape Format → Group → Group.
  4. Name the group “01 卵” (egg). Name the remaining groups “02 幼虫” (larva), “03 蛹” (pupa) and “04 成虫” (adult), matching the Chinese example.

Move a group slightly, then undo, to check for a missing name or caption. You can still select a text box inside the group to edit words, or select a picture to resize it. For a crowded slide, follow the Selection Pane organization guide before grouping.

Download the four-stage animation PPTX (about 14 MB). Open slide 2 and press Shift + F5 to present from the current slide. Advance four times: each stage group grows slightly, then returns to its original size.

Add an effect to each group and arrange the sequence

These steps use desktop PowerPoint for Windows. Finish grouping before adding effects to keep the Animation Pane easy to follow.

  1. Select the egg group. On the Animations tab, add the Grow/Shrink emphasis effect.
  2. In its Effect Options, set Size to 105% and enable Auto-reverse so it returns to its original size. Set Duration to 0.5 seconds.
  3. Set Start to On Click. The example takes 0.5 seconds forward and 0.5 seconds back, about one second in total.
  4. Apply the same settings to the remaining groups. Open the Animation Pane and order them as egg, larva, pupa and adult.
  5. Present from the current slide and advance at your speaking pace. If several groups play after one click, check whether later effects are set to With Previous or After Previous.

The example keeps the whole scene visible and emphasizes the stage being discussed. Once the objects are separate, you can choose a different playback style:

Playback goalSettingWhat to check
Highlight one stage as you explain itAn emphasis effect, starting On ClickKeep the size change small enough to leave room around nearby text and artwork.
Reveal one group per clickThe Fade entrance effect, starting On ClickInspect the empty areas at the start of playback for text or artwork left in the background.
Show a picture, followed by its captionSeparate effects; set the caption to After PreviousManage the picture and caption as separate objects or groups and check their sequence.

For a Fade entrance, repair any remnants revealed when the picture is hidden before arranging the animation. A matching background shape can cover a plain area; a textured area may need image repair. An emphasis effect also lets you keep the complete scene visible. See background checks after moving or deleting elements for the repair workflow.

Check that the illustration and its caption move together

Restart from the current slide and check all four groups. Look for a caption that stays behind, a background included by mistake, or an enlarged picture that overlaps nearby text. Select a text box inside its group when you need to edit wording. After substantial regrouping, check the affected objects and order in the Animation Pane again.

Save as PPTX, close and reopen the file, and confirm that the four effects are still present. Before presenting or handing it over, play it on the intended computer and software to check font wrapping and timing. The downloadable example has been saved, reopened and its animation settings checked in PowerPoint.
